INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background of Study

The use of contraceptives is neither a simple nor uncomplicated process. It can be complicated and comes with many challenges that hinder its effective implementation and sustainable use. Effective management of these challenges could improve the use of contraception. Belfied (2013: 26) stated that being an effective and efficient contraceptive provider requires knowing why and how people make contraceptive choices. Minimizing unwanted pregnancies will depend on the satisfaction and trust of the user in the method and effectiveness of the method. Developing a perfect method is almost impossible, as this method must be 100% safe, effective, with no side effects, no sexual intercourse, reversible and cheap. Admitting that no contraceptive method is right for everyone is a big challenge for contraceptive providers. Speizer, Hotchkiss, Magnani, Hubbard, and Nelson (2000: 13) reported that contraceptives are rarely a problem, whether they are facilities, policies, providers, or laws. As South Africa is a country of limited resources and resources, the effective use of contraceptives can improve not only the lives of the men, women and children involved, but also that of their families and communities. The main reason for having sex is not always procreation (Visser 2000: 18). According to the DOH (2001: 7-9), various factors influence contraceptive use, socioeconomic status, knowledge about contraceptives, attitudes towards contraceptives, residential area, educational status, advice received contraceptives, contraceptive provider attitudes and cultural values, norms, and beliefs.
